Round 1: Northwest Arkansas Hornets:
No. 2 Green Country Defenders won a convincing 56-42 victory over a talented No. 7 Northwest Arkansas Hornet team in the opening round of the 2014 Regional Homeschool Basketball Tournament held in Oklahoma City. The Defenders turned its defensive pressure into high gear and surged out to a 12 point first quarter lead 18-6. They never looked back as they collected a total of 13 steals in the contest.
On offensive, the Defenders used excellent ball movement and spacing to help them shoot 56% from the field for the game. The Defenders were led by Jackson Price’s consistent play with 26 points followed by Peyton Francisco with 15 and Parker Slack with 10. Price and Slack also crashed the boards with 10 and 6 respectively. Francisco contributed 9 assists and 6 steals while Michael Saxton dished out 4 assists.
The semi-final game of the South Central Regional Homeschool Basketball tournament saw the No. 2 Green Country Defenders lose a heart breaker to the No. 3 Fort Smith Patriots 57-54. It came down to cold shooting in the second half as the Defenders shot 26%, hitting only 7 of 27 shots.
The Defenders struck first in the game and led 24-15 after the first quarter and continued their hot shooting as they hit 62% in the first half. Peyton Francisco got things started by hitting 4-three pointers in the first quarter. They went into half with a 36-29 point lead and were up 45-39 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was a different story as the Patriot outscored them 18-9 to claim the victory.
The Defenders balanced scoring attack was led by Francisco with 16 points, Michael Saxton, 14, Jackson Price, 11 points, Sevey Price, 7 and Parker Slack with 6. Jackson Price also collected 9 boards. Sevey Price had 6 steals while Francisco contributed 4. Sevey Price, Francisco and Saxton ran the offense well by dishing out 4 assists each.
Third placed game:
No. 2 Green Country Defenders lost to the No. 4 Pulaski Flames 64-50 in the third place game at the 2014 Regional Homeschool Basketball Tournament in Oklahoma City.
Behind the offensive efforts of Michael Saxton 11 points and Jackson Price 10 points, the Defenders went into the half with a commanding 32-23 lead. They used efficient passing as the assisted on 11 of the team’s 13 baskets in the half. Then they went extremely cold in the second half by hitting only 5 of 24 shots. They were still in it at the end of three quarters as they were only down 39-41 but overcome the hot shooting of the Flames in the final frame.
The Defenders were led by Price with 18 and Saxton with 17. Price also snagged 10 boards and Peyton Francisco dished out 9 assists. Sevey Price and Saxton led with 3 steals each as Jackson Price and Francisco chipped in with 2 each.
